Poem #4

Dio rides dragons at dawn

Dio enjoys dragon riding and brothel mints

He loves working out in his Sunday sweats at Planet Fitness.

You can bet Dio eats peyote in Hell’s desert

He dances with demons and Jim Morrison from “the Doors.”

Dio’s lust for angel dust sends him into hallucinations

The dragons and demons beg him to stop and take a vacation.

Dio rails Adderall all night while jamming to Elvis

He does this to relieve his pelvis from riding dragons all day.

Dio knows the value of centerfold daydreaming

His sister hides his Cosmopolitan magazines.

Dio crashes on the couch from day drinking.

He snores like a grizzly bear with no care.

Dio rides dragons while sliding down rainbows at dawn

He loves camping out nightly on Hell’s lawn.

Writer’s note: I chose the sonnet writing style to create a storytelling mood. Ronnie James Dio passed away and wanted include him in my portfolio for poetry. The insight I would like the reader to acquire is the lifestyle of a metal legend.

The vices are the color of the lifestyle. The flow of the poem came from the heart. The writer misses Dio and takes the opportunity to recall his name as a memory of his influence with metal musicians who struggle with addiction.

Creative writing is a portal to escaping addiction. Hell is a metaphor for the vice. The reader does not have conform to Christianity to understand Hell. The writer questions whether the reader relates to the sonnet, and does the sonnet resonate with the writer’s intent?
